I’ll admit: I use to think I was smarter than all the SEO people, and I definitely thought I was smarter than Google. I thought SEO was just something that people used to make money off unsuspecting website owners. After all, if I had a website that had content about my business then it was automatically going to have everything a search engine needed, right? Wrong, wrong, wrong.
As I sat watching my website traffic trickle in and listening to crickets, I realized I needed help. I eventually stumbled across the high-end web design experts at Plato, and I found some real insights into what I was doing wrong and what I could do right.
My #1 biggest mistake was not using the power of SEO to not only create greater depth for my web presence, but to make my site attractive to the Google search algorithms. I had to learn the language of search engines, most importantly Google, and how the web works because it sure didn’t work the way I thought it did. I had been stubborn in my ignorance and I had a “if I build it they will come” naïve belief.
Actually, I have a confession to make. Even when no one showed up at my website, checked out my services or connected with me, I still didn’t think I had done anything wrong. I thought my winning personality was worth more than understanding how things worked on the web and sooner or later word of mouth was going to work for me. Of course I didn’t know what I didn’t know. If you’re like me and you have a successful service based business and especially if you have a bricks and mortar business that customers love, you may think you know it all.
So when I was idly searching for some basic SEO info, I didn’t really think it could help me. Even when I looked at impressive SEO guides like the Moz beginner’s guide to SEO, I told myself I was just reading to see how silly it all was. But the shocking thing was that I found out quickly not only what I was doing wrong, but what I could quickly do right. I still wasn’t convinced. Of course. I knew my business very well after all. But, the crickets were chirping pretty loudly at this point and I decided it wouldn’t hurt to try one of the tips. So I followed the step by step instructions for Google+ and lo and behold I saw an increase in traffic. My smiling face was coming up in search results!
After that there was no stopping me. Now my only problem is keeping up with my traffic and the demands for my services. Now I’m an SEO believer. You have to know the language and use it to your advantage. You have to understand how customers find you and be there. Now I may have to hire an assistant. But I’m not complaining!
